Learn the Language of Your Ori

Ori is a Yoruba metaphysical concept. In English the word literally means “head” as this is where Ori is believed to reside, inside your head. The concept refers to deity that guides you in your destiny here on earth. Ori is what other spiritual traditions might refer to as your “intuition” or “Higher Self”. In the Yoruba tradition, we believe that you and your Ori choose your destiny while you are in heaven, before being born. When you are born, your Ori joins you on Earth to keep you on track with the destiny that you chose in Heaven. How wonderful that we have our own spirit watching over us and helping us! The only problem is communicating with our Ori on Earth isn’t as easy as it was when you were in heaven. In heaven, you understood all the languages of your ancestors, on Earth you were only taught English. In heaven, you were surrounded by your ancestors and culture, on Earth you grew up in a community where people told you the existence of Ori was impossible. For reasons like these, we in the diaspora often have a shaky connection when trying to communicate with our Ori, as if we’re calling long distance on an analog phone.
